While that's a bad contract, it's probably about the 85th worst contract this offseason. i also didnt realize his huge deal for like $55 mil was up already. seems like only yesterday the rangers signed him up for 5 years after his legendary 15-11/3.50 era season in 2001 for LA...
That's true. This year has been so ridiculous with contracts. Figure this one out: The Mets had an option to pick up another year of Glavine's contract at 12 million, or buy him out for 3 million. Minaya buys him out, then re-signs him for 11 million a month later. So, the Mets lose 2 million on that deal just to be courteous in letting Glavine negotiate with the Braves. The marketplace for front of the rotation pitching is so insane these days that a couple million bucks to save face is no longer than big of a deal. Hell, I'd rather throw away 2 million dollars than pay 3 million for Chan Ho Park's services.
What do you think a legitimately awesome ace is going to get in a market like this? Santoro says he wants the Mets to give Carlos Zambrano 25 million/year next year. Now that they passed on Zito, and with Glavine's and Pedro's deal up, I kind of agree. If Johan hit the free agent market, I think he'd make 30mil.
pedro got four years, he's still a met through '08 i believe.
its hard to say stuff like that about zambrano and johan. i mean consider that manny, arod, jeter, etc got those astronomical deals in 2000-2001, then a few years later guys like tejada and vlad were only getting like 12-14 mil per year. granted, baseball is making cash hand over fist and the labor agreement is set for a while, so the free agents coming up are pretty well set. but do you think any team will saddle itself with an arod-ly contract again? maybe if its like 4 years or so, but those kinds of deals kill flexibility for probably 27 teams and are impossible to move. the market got mad stupid this year, though, so anything is possible i guess.
I remember that drop off when Vlad was a free agent - he nearly signed an incentive-laden deal with the Mets that gauranteed him less than 10 mil per year. That strange drop in contract values made no sense to me. Did the owners make less money than the previous few years? Did the owners overextend their budgets by signing guys to monster deals? Did they get together at the winter meetings and collectively decide to make low-ball offers and not get into bidding wars with one another? If that correction didn't happen, things would have been out of hand in '02 (they pretty much avoided a state like this offseason). It was a necessary correction in the market, for sure. But why did it happen? And do you think there's evidence that that sort of down year will happen again next year? Common sense says "If mediocre pitcher X got 4 years, 44 million just last season, young stud pitcher Y should get a much bigger deal this year." Why did this trend not continue that year the Vlad was a free agent? Why did it take so long to get back to the insanity of the current free agent market? Will it persist? Honestly, I think it will.
That was the year where the players association was crying about collusion, and probably for good reason considering the drop-off in salaries. i think in general that salaries for similar players are used as benchmarks for subsequent years. however, in the case of 2000/2001 when all that stupid money was being thrown around, it got way out of control and there was that huge correction in the market. at the time, i seem to recall there being a consensus heading into the offseason that guys were going to get paid considerably less this time around because things spiraled out of control the previous year, plus there was a new CBA in place that effected everything (though i dont claim to know the details behind that).
but this offseason feels a lot like the 2000/2001 offseasons when shit-ass guys like ted lilly and gil meche are getting huge deals. but all the teams are making a ton of money now, so who knows whats gonna happen.
just wait til ryan howard and miggy cabrera are on the market.
While for the team it wasn't an amazing signing, I'm thinking there's an alterior motive here. And being Korean, just like Chan Ho, it would be best put in a formula:
Chan Ho + Flushing + Koreans = $$$$$ for the Mets
Even if he does suck, which he probably will, at least you get to see a ton of Korean people at Shea chant his name, which is definitely the last thing you want (example: the World Cup). So have fun Mets fans, you can add loud, annoying Korean chants to your Hispanic and "I want your babies David Wright!" cheering sections.
I have a comment. What the fuck is Beyonce doing on the cover of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue? She's hot, granted, but definitely not swimsuit issue hot. The mag should only have girls who are so hot they look they are members of a different species. We're about 3 years away from having a pregnant Brittany Spears in a bathrobe and slippers on the cover.

Ah yes, I can see it now - "Chhaaaan Hoooo, Chan-Ho, Chan-Ho, Chan-Ho, Chaaaaan Hoooo..."
This guy better not make the major league roster.
