NFL picks

Patroits @ Chargers (-4.5)
Isn't it amazing that all four remaining AFC teams probably would be favored to go to Miami next month if they were in the NFC? Not that it gaurantees they'll stop him, but the Pats D is clearly going to key on LT. They have to. This game will be decided by how well Phillip Rivers can beat the Patriots battered secondary. Expect a big game out of Antonio Gates. Oh, and the Chargers have the best defensive player in the NFL. He's on steroids. He did not win the defensive player of the years. And he's pissed.

The pick: San Diego 27, Patroits 13

Colts @ Ravens (-3.5)
This is the first year in the last few where the Colts have not been a Super Bowl favorite at this point in the season. I think it helps them fly under the radar, for once, to beat the slightly-favored Ravens. There's been a lot of buzz about the pressure on Peyton. Why is everyone so worried? He's the most durable QB in the league (assuming Favre hangs 'em up). This guy could easily be like Elway, winning his first title 10 years from now. And who even cares if he doesn't win a Super Bowl? Dan Marino does not have a ring and I do not hear critics ripping his career these days. Everyone remembers Marino's records, and he hasn't even been out of the game for that long. Back to this week's matchup - this Colts team has an abominable defense. Luckily, they're playing the Ravens. Do I see a Vinatieri GW FG in the cards?

The pick: Colts 23, Ravens 20

Seahawks @ Bears (-8.5)
This spread is huge. In this case, it's a non factor. I cannot bet on the Seahawks anymore. I lost money on the SB last year, and lost again betting on them to beat the Bears earlier this season (and I was given 10.5 points). I am done randomly defending this team. They have no heart. They've just gone through the motions all season. Remember when Matt Hasselback was an exuberant, rising QB who has the nuts to announce to a visiting stadium that the Hawks would "Take the ball and... score!" ??? He would have been the 4th QB on my fantasy team this season. Over/Under on Shaun Alexander's rush yards? I'm going to guess 55.

The Pick: Bears 21, Seahawks 10

Eagles @ New Orleans (-5)
The Saints are not that good. Good thing the Eagles are even worse. For me, this is the least interesting game in the second round of the NFL playoffs that I can remember. At this point, the New Orleans revival story is very old (although I gaurantee that's how the media covers this game). My editor is forcing me to include "In the wake of Hurricane Katrina" in this post to keep our blog consistent with the media masses. So here it goes: "In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, the Saints made the playoffs, then got the shit kicked out of them when they realized they were two years away from being a legit Super Bowl contender." Count on a big game from Brian Westbrook, who I actually enjoyed watching for the first time ever last week.

The Pick: Eagles 30, Saints 24

Hello ladies, this comment is for both your posts. Firstly, Trout, love the Jasmine St. Clare reference haven't heard that name since I used to watch Stern on the E! channel after my parents fell asleep in high school (side note - didn't get laid til college). Surprisingly enough her Ripken-like streak was recently ended by none other than a rising starlet named Houston, hailing from..you guessed it! Imagine marrying one of these girls? It would be like tossing a hot dog in an airplane hanger. Anyway, for the most part I agree with your picks. It's too early for Manning to choke (interesting side note, SportsCenter this morning mentioned that 3 years ago the Colts drafted their starting left DE specifically to stop Steve McNair when he was with the Titans. He is undersized and fast as hell. Interested to see how that plays out).
For Bears-Hawks, my boss just informed me that the forecast calls for "winter-like" conditions aka it's gonna be a ground contest and since shaun alexander is more fragile than a 5 year old girl who just got told her cat died, I'm saying Bears win 3-0 (grossman factor included).
As for Saint-Eagles, I'm a little torn. On one hand, the Eagles are the more complete team. Remember that this was the NFC frontrunner until McNabb went down. They have a solid D and the most dynamic player in the game in Westbrook. However I just don't feel comfortable picking a team whose QB is listening to the Village People in his headphones in pre-game warm-ups. On top of that, make no mistake, we haven't seen nearly the best of Reggie Bush yet. No one talked about it, but he literally stunk the first 6 games of the season, was afraid to get hit, and always ran out of bounds. The past few games he's starting to get his college swagger back, and I can easily see him breaking for 2 huge plays tomorrow.
Finally it's the mack daddy of this weekends match-ups and both of you have your heads up your arses (see: William Wallace) on this one. Did you see the press interviews this week??!! Forget the whole Marty blows big games, and Philip Rivers' first playoff game (he's looked like he has no idea what he's getting himself into all week). Someone is going to have to file a police report after what Tom Brady does to these guys. All week he's praised the Chargers team while oh so subtley looking more confident than Apollo before his first Rocky fight. The Pats are peaking at the right time, and I agree with Bill Simmons that they've employed the Milton Berle theory this year. They're going to surprise the Chargers with how tough they play and in the end be victorious. I predict Marty will play the short game in the first half, keeping the ball on the ground and throwing short outs and screen passes to LT, so he takes some pressure off Rivers. It won't work, they'll go into halftime down 21-7, and in the second half they'll overcompensate by throwing Rivers too much. I'm calling this one 31-24 Pats when the dust clears. Side note: you can't have a successful QB who goes by his full name. If he went by Phil Rivers, this might be a whole different story, but I'm not throwing my support behind someone who calls himself Philip. History will teach us that Philip Simms, Joseph Montana, Steven Young, Terrence Bradshaw, Benjamin Rothlisberger, and Dauntascius Culpepper never won super bowls...(well we're still waiting on dauntascius)

legend-
i think that broke the record for longest comment ever by several hundred words. well done, sir. Only thing i needed to respond to was this ridiculous statement: "...and the most dynamic player in the game in Westbrook." Now, Westbrook is a gifted player, no question. However, as far as i know, ladainian tomlinson is still in the league and i'd say one could make a pretty good argument on his behalf. Saying Westbrook is the most dynamic player in the league after Tomlinson had maybe the greatest season ever and scored a shitload of TDs through running, catching, and passing is like saying Ivan Rodriguez was the AL's most valuable player in 1999.

Trout, my fault for not being more clear. I meant Westbrook was the most dynamic player in the eagles-saints game this sunday, not the whole nfl.

The Eagles were predicted to finish last in the NFC East before the season. Not sure where youre getting the idea that they were always considered a contender.

And Westbrook isnt even the most dynamic player in the Eagles-NO game. Reggie Bush is (tons of catches, returns kicks, gets 20 carries). Westbrook is the best back in the game, but Bush is the most dynamic.
